I was quite shocked and appalled that no one had started an Angela Carter community, and so I took it upon myself to do so. I wanted to create a place for Carter fans to come together and to discuss the life and works of this brazen, brilliant woman.
For those with only slight familiarity with her work, Carter (1940-1992) was a British novelist who fused magical realism with picaresque bawdiness. Her prose was as baroque as her imagination...one encounters a world of marionettes, music hall performers, courtesans, philosophers, sorcerers, fairies.
Her novels include "The Magic Toyshop," "The Infernal Desire Machines of Doctor Hoffman," "The Passions of New Eve," "Nights at the Circus (commonly regarded as her masterpiece)," and "Wise Children." She wrote several books of short stories, including the self-descriptive "Fireworks: Nine Profane Pieces," and "The Bloody Chamber," a book of revisionist feminist fairy tales.
